The Innovation promotion fund has summed up the results of the open competition on the financial support for the projects of the program “Man on duty for the planet”. EDB Fakel (a part of the Roscosmos State corporation) is one of the competition winners with a presented project about a propulsion system for Cubesat format nanosatellites.
In frames of the project a flight unit of the compact gas propulsion system is planned for development to be used on-board an educational nanosatellite. The plan also includes a development of two dummies of the propulsion system for on-ground testing, a development of the educational method for spacecraft on-board systems control and carrying out satellite flight test in the Earth orbit as educational tasks (space missions).
The propulsion system dummies will be installed on the dedicated portable test stands and tested with schoolchildren participation, what will enable to demonstrate visually the propulsion system design and also study the operational and control principles of the CubeSat format spacecraft.
The educational method, which is under development in frames of this project, will be approbated on the basis of the children’s technological park “Quantorium” located in Kaliningrad and in the Centre for development of modern competence among children at the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University. The participants will be schoolchildren who will study the principles of orbital motion, orbital maneuvers and basics of operation of CubeSat format small spacecraft equipped with propulsion systems.
The project “Man on duty for the planet” unites the space-themed competitions with various specializations. The participants will work on real tasks, study modern methods used in engineering and space technologies, put into practice their knowledge in physics, mathematics and other school subjects. The main goal of the project is to make space studies and developments more popular among schoolchildren in Russia.
The organizers of the program “Man on duty for the planet” are the Educational fund “Talent and success” (“Sirius” educational center), the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (SkolTech), the Fund for assistance of small-size enterprises development in the scientific and technical sphere (The Innovation promotion fund) and the Roscosmos State corporation.
JSC EDB Fakel (a part of the state corporation Roscosmos) is one of the leading enterprises in development of electric propulsion systems and thermal catalytic propulsion systems operating using Hydrazine. Fakel has a production experience in serial and mass delivery of thrusters both in commercial and state market segments. The share of the thrusters production in the world for spacecraft is about 10%. More than 70 Russian spacecraft (more than 60% of the Russian orbital constellation) and 30 Western spacecraft are equipped with thrusters developed and produced by EDB Fakel. Today EDB Fakel’s partners are ISS Reshetnev, RSC Energia, Khrunichev State Research and Production Center, Lavochkin Research and Production Association, Research and Production Corporation VNIIEM, Maxar (Canada), Airbus, TAS (France), MELСO (Japan), IAI (Israel), OHB (Sweden).
ROSCOSMOS is the state corporation established in August 2015 for a comprehensive reform of the rocket and space industry of Russia. ROSCOSMOS ensures performance of the state policy in space industry and normative regulation. ROSCOSMOS also places orders for development, production and delivery of space hardware and space infrastructural objects. Also, one of its functions is to develop international co-operation in space industry and provide conditions to use the results of the space activities for a social and economic progress of Russia.
