JSC EDB Fakel supported by the Innovation promotion fund has finished developing a gas propulsion system for CubeSat format nanosatellites

The new gas propulsion system was developed in frames of implementation of the program “Man on duty for the planet”. The gas propulsion system is fully compatible with 3U and 6U-format CubeSat nanosatellites and is intended for solving various ballistic mission tasks set for CubeSat format nanosatellites. The volume of the system is 1U (100х100х100 mm) and it consumes not more than 9 W of power. The scientific and technical results will enable JSC EDB Fakel (a part of the integrated structure of JSC NPO Energomash of the Roscosmos state corporation) to enter the market of nanosatellites, what will make it possible to expand a spectrum of developed products, as well as the co-operation with the universities which develop nanosatellites. Today, JSC EDB Fakel started manufacturing three experimental units of the gas propulsion system. Two of the units are aimed at carrying out on-ground experimental testing and a series of laboratory works to approbate the education method. Another experimental unit is intended for flight testing in frames of the Space – Pi project.

JSC EDB Fakel (a part of the state corporation Roscosmos) is one of the leading enterprises in development of electric propulsion systems and thermal catalytic propulsion systems operating using Hydrazine. Fakel has a production experience in serial and mass delivery of thrusters both in commercial and state market segments. The share of the thrusters production in the world for spacecraft is about 10%. More than 70 Russian spacecraft (more than 60% of the Russian orbital constellation) and 30 Western spacecraft are equipped with thrusters developed and produced by EDB Fakel. Today EDB Fakel’s partners are ISS Reshetnev, RSC Energia, Khrunichev State Research and Production Center, Lavochkin Research and Production Association, Research and Production Corporation VNIIEM, Maxar (USA), Airbus, TAS (France), MELСO (Japan), IAI (Israel), OHB (Sweden).

NPO Energomash is the world leader in development of powerful liquid rocket engines for space launch vehicles. NPO Energomash has the unique family of liquid rocket engines with the thrust range from 60 up to 1000 tf, which can meet the requirements of the various class launch vehicles developers. Established in 1929. Awarded with the Order of Lenin, Order of the Red Banner of Labor and Order of the October Revolution.

ROSCOSMOS is the state corporation established in August 2015 for a comprehensive reform of the rocket and space industry of Russia. ROSCOSMOS ensures performance of the state policy in space industry and normative regulation. ROSCOSMOS also places orders for development, production and delivery of space hardware and space infrastructural objects. Also, one of its functions is to develop international co-operation in space industry and provide conditions to use the results of the space activities for a social and economic progress of Russia.
