December 8, 2021, Kaliningrad. – EDB Fakel (part of JSC NPO Energomash rocket engine manufacturing integrated structure of the Roscosmos state corporation) delivered the 500th SPT-50M satellite thrusters to OneWeb.
The purpose of the thruster is to perform orbit-raising, station keeping and deorbit manoeuvres. With a mass of 1.29 kg and a thrust of 16 mN, the thruster lifetime is exceeding 3000 h and 11000 on-off cycles. Its application on board of small spacecrafts enables to increase the payload mass and extend their lifetime, what significantly increases their efficiency.
The SPT-50M thrusters are delivered to be part of the propulsion modules of all low Earth orbit OneWeb satellites.
Currently, there are 358 OneWeb satellites in orbit. The first six satellites were launched into space from the Kourou spaceport, French Guiana, with a Soyuz ST launcher on 28 February, 2019. On 7 February, 2020, 34 spacecraft were launched, on 21 March the same number of satellites was launched. The first launch from the Vostochny cosmodrome took place in the middle of December 2020 with 36 spacecraft. Then the following launches from the new Russian cosmodrome took place on 25 March, 26 April, 28 May and 1 July, 2021, from Baikonur on 22 August and 14 September, 2021. On 14 October, 2021, at 12:40 Moscow time the 11th launch for OneWeb program took place.
As noted by EDB Fakel’s Director Gennadiy Abramenkov: “On 14 October the Fregat upper stage transferred 36 satellites into the targeted circular orbit at the altitude of 450 km. It is gratifying to know that the further transition to their operational orbit at 1200 km will be done by the satellites with the help of their SPT-50M thrusters.”
Hundreds more satellites equipped with thrusters made by EDB Fakel are set for launch in the next coming years.
Low Earth orbit OneWeb satellites will serve to provide users on Earth with high-speed Internet access directly through the satellite connection. The total number of OneWeb satellites constellation to be manufactured and launched will be at least 648 satellites.
