On September 17th, 2018, the EDB Fakel held a yearly session of Science and Technology Board in order to summarize results of experimental and design activities in most challenging areas of thruster engineering. Apart from that the board defined the main scientific and technology research areas for 2019, as well as the action plan for scientific research laboratory for electric propulsion.

The Board performed the assessment of successful test results of new EDB products, opportunities to expand the existing SPT product line, improvement of thruster specific performances, application of new materials and expanded lifetime.

This year the new Thruster Orientation Mechanism (ТОМ) is about to complete its qualification with thrusters SPT-100 and SPT-140 in collaboration with RUAG Schweiz (Switzerland).

One of the crucial activities of the EDB Fakel’s Science and Technology Board is development of “green” propellant thrusters. The application of this type of propellant significantly optimizes thruster performances, contribute to longer lifetime, as well as improve efficiency and functionality of spacecrafts.  

In order to comply with the Directive of the President of the Russian Federation regarding import substitution policy, specialists of the EDB performed several researches aimed at using Russian produced materials in units that have been successfully manufactured and accepted by Customers.

An emphasis was made on development of different types of thrusters to be integrated on small spacecrafts, including those of CubeSat type. Past experience and results of current projects enable to consider the participation of the EDB Fakel in Russian and European programs of similar small spacecrafts. In order to progress in this direction it is planned to develop an experimental setup to qualify nano-thrusters to be used on board of small spacecrafts in space conditions.
